As GEM HERSTORY Month unfolds, we pay tribute to a woman whose influence is woven deeply into the fabric of GEM CULTURE - Lillian Smith Longley, affectionately known as "Tootsie." The late grandmother of our Founder, RIMIDI, and the mother of Elle Bee, Stephanie, and Sonya Longley, Lillian was a cornerstone in shaping the values and vision of GEM CULTURE.
Lillian's impact on RIMIDI and the culture she built is profound. From observing her grandmother meticulously prepare meals with care and diligence, RIMIDI learned the importance of presentation and the value of taking one's time. Lillian's role as the matriarch brought the family together, commanding respect and unity without having to say much. Her ability to lead with both love and fearlessness left a lasting impression on her descendants, instilling in them strong personalities and spirits. These were traits instilled in her from her parents, Bo (strict and no nonsense) and Leila (sweet and nurturing) Smith - the best of both worlds.
Lillian's leadership extended beyond her family. Despite becoming pregnant at 16 and leaving high school, she defied the odds by returning to complete her education, earning her GED. She went on to earn an AA from Miami Dade College, a master's degree from Barry University, and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Miami, all while raising four (4) children all from her husband. Her intelligence and drive were undeniable, as she excelled in various skills, from sewing to cooking, and eventually became a respected teacher in the public school system.
Together with her husband, William Longley, Lillian made significant strides for their family, being among the first Black families to move into a predominantly white community in Miami Gardens. Her brilliance and foresight in investing in land and property laid a foundation for their success.
Lillian's legacy as a powerful and influential figure extends beyond her family. The overflowing attendance at her funeral spoke volumes about the lives she touched. Her role as a mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and educator continues to inspire and live on through GEM CULTURE and its herstory.
As we honor Lillian Smith Longley, we celebrate her resilience, authenticity, and the indelible mark she has left on the culture. Her spirit and values are ingrained in the heart of GEM CULTURE, forever shaping its path and empowering the next generation of GEMS.
