As GEM HERSTORY Month continues, we honor a woman whose dedication and vibrant spirit have been instrumental in shaping the early days of GEM CULTURE - Tawana Hosey. As one of our founding GEM Mentors, Tawana joined forces with RIMIDI in 2019, bringing her passion for education and mentorship to the forefront.
Serving as an Instructional Reading Coach at the same middle school where RIMIDI was an educator, Tawana was one of the first to answer the call when RIMIDI sought educators to mentor the girls of GEM CULTURE. Her influence within the culture was monumental, as she supported every aspect of the program, from attending meetings to facilitating sessions alongside our Guest GEM Mentors.
Tawana brought a sense of boldness, color, and confidence to GEM CULTURE, encouraging the girls to be themselves and to show up to meetings with enthusiasm. Her unwavering commitment to showing up every Tuesday, unless unable, set a standard for dedication and service to our GEMS. Her presence, along with the other founding GEM Mentors, was pivotal in allowing GEM CULTURE to manifest itself seamlessly, serving 25 girls in its inaugural semester.
Her role in the preparation of GEM CULTURE's first-ever Crowning Ceremony, alongside Matasha Mondy, was vital. Tawana went above and beyond in decorating and fulfilling her duties, showcasing her ability to bring visions to life. As an educator, mother of daughters, and active alumna of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), Tawana's multifaceted life experiences have enriched GEM CULTURE. We are profoundly grateful for her contributions and are proud to honor her as a crucial part of GEM CULTURE's herstory during Women's History Month.
Tawana Hosey is undeniably a key piece of the puzzle that helped bring the vision of GEM CULTURE to light in its early stages, and her legacy continues to inspire and shape the culture.
